Backstory

Beachy Books

Beachy Books is an independent book publisher based in the South East of England. The company is run by Philip Bell, a published author and writer.

Beachy Books was established by Philip Bell in 2009 to publish his first picture book called Jack and Boo’s Bucket of Treasures. The book was a labour of love and captured the fun days out on the beach with his young children. It featured real photos, colourful illustrations and poetic prose.

The book helped Philip Bell win a Writing Magazine Children’s Publishing award, and three more Jack and Boo titles in the series were published and have sold very well over the years. Jack and Boo proved very popular with parents and young children and were also used by teachers to connect with curriculum topics on nature and geography.

Over the years Philip has worked with individuals and community groups to help them publish books, and has now turned his passion into a full-time business providing publishing services and becoming an independent book publisher with a good reputation.

Philip is published by Walker Children’s Books and several other publishers, and has work published in several magazines and short story collections, including magazine articles. His story for young children, Bedtime at the Lighthouse, was chosen by former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen, to be included in the Mumsnet/Walker Books – The Book of Bedtime Stories. This is what Walker Books said about the shortlisted authors.

During his career, he has worked as a computer programmer for London banks, designed interactive adverts and games such as interactive Who Wants To Be a Millionaire for ITV, created services for SKY’s interactive shopping channel, worked as a programmer at BBC News, been a copywriter in the marketing team for the UK’s premier EPoS company, created technical user guides for set-top-boxes, and been a copywriter for design agencies and clients such as Microsoft. Philip has even worked a stint as a librarian in a rural village. He is now a publisher at Beachy Books and writes his own books when he gets time.

In 2020, Philip incorporated and created ‘Beachy Books Limited’ with a view to traditionally publish books on the Beachy Books imprint, alongside the company’s long-established author-publishing services.

Beachy Books is now a member of the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG).
